Virginia’s General Assembly Is Back In Session

RICHMOND, VA — Virginia’s General Assembly is back in session with Republicans in charge. After a brief opening ceremony, lawmakers got right to work. It’s the first time in eleven years that Republicans are in control of the governor’s office and the General Assembly. Democrats asked that the chairs of committees be evenly divided among Republicans and Democrats but that would have been a departure from tradition. The party in power, which had been the Democrats, usually gets to lead committees. This time around, voters put Republicans in the majority of the House. The Senate is evenly split, 50-50, but the Republican Lt. Governor gets to break any ties. Coverage by WCYB.COM January 11, 2012
